I regularly attend and volunteer at a church in San Diego, CA. Over the past 12 years, our church has met at 3+ locations. Now, we rent two large buildings in the corner of a large strip mall. It works well for our needs, but our long-term goal is to build our own facility, where we can host gatherings and meetings and better serve the community.

Of course, it takes a lot of time and money to reach this goal. We’ve been blessed with a large parcel of land in a great location and key breakthroughs in permitting. But we still have a long way to go–and a lot of money to raise.

One critical strategy that the church has adopted is to use a pledge campaign to raise the funds.

What is a Pledge Campaign?

A pledge campaign is a giving campaign that allows churches to fundraise over a period of time without requiring immediate contributions.

Donors can agree to pledge a certain amount of money by a given deadline. Then, they have the option to begin making immediate donations to meet that goal. Or, they can wait until a later date to start giving. Donors choose the frequency at which they give.

Let’s say Kevin wants to give $1,000 to a pledge campaign for building a new kid’s center. The pledge campaign will end in five months. So, Kevin decides to give $100 twice a month until he meets his goal.

Pledge campaigns are typically created for larger projects, such as generating funds for a new church building

However, churches may choose to use them for meeting the annual budget, performing a much-needed renovation, or even purchasing a car for a church member in need.

In theory, pledge campaigns can be used for just about anything. The key is to bring church members on board with a vision and mission, and to make it easy for church members to give with technology like Tithe.ly’s Giving Pledge Campaign tool.

4 Benefits of a Pledge Campaign

Why run a pledge campaign when you can ask for all your funding upfront?

For starters, a pledge campaign is far more likely to help you raise more money. Many of your church members may want to give generously, but it’s more realistic to give over a period of time.

Making a pledge gives donors the opportunity to give more generously to your church’s vision without completely emptying their bank accounts.

Here are three more benefits of running a pledge campaign.

Creates Consistency

A pledge campaign helps build consistent giving at your church. It takes discipline and planning to make a regular contribution to a pledge campaign. A pledge campaign can help build accountability into generosity by sending regular reminders to give or even setting up automatic withdrawals.

Builds Vision for Giving

Pledge campaigns are exciting because they bring your church family together in an effort to hit a specific goal. Let’s say your church needs to raise $300,000 to purchase a new building.

By seeing their pledges help stack up to hit the final goal, church members get a greater sense of ownership in the campaign–and get greater vision for giving.

Increases Financial Partnership

Pledge campaigns can help your church family see how exciting and significant it is to become financial partners in the Kingdom. When the campaign ends, you can bet that you’ll have new committed donors at your church, and a renewed sense of the blessing of generosity

How to Create a Pledge Campaign at Your Church

Creating a pledge campaign doesn’t have to be challenging, but you do have to start with the right technology.

If you use Tithe.ly, you’re already off to the right start. That’s because Tithe.ly makes it simple (and cost-effective) to design and deploy a pledge campaign for your church.

Here are 4 steps to creating a Tithe.ly Pledge campaign that can help you reach your goal–whether that’s to move into a new church building or to start a new outreach ministry.

  1. Add a campaign pledge page to your site.

Log in to your admin account with Tithe.ly. After you've chosen Pledge Campaigns from the Giving menu on the left, click on the campaign whose webpage and embed you'd like to customize. Next, click on Webpage. This area of Pledge Campaigns allows you to manage how the campaign is shared and displayed.

The Webpage Display section allows you to customize what content is shown on the campaign webpage. You are able to toggle different elements ON and OFF in order to customize what is displayed (Learn more about creating a Pledge Campaign page here).

  1. Add a campaign description and video.

Think through how you want to communicate the vision of your campaign. What’s your long-term goal and big-picture vision for the campaign? Is it to reach out more effectively to the lost? Is it to serve your church members in every stage of their lives? Is it to pay off debt and get your church to a healthier financial state?

In any case, you’ll want to communicate your vision in a carefully thought mission statement for the pledge. Then–if you’ve got the resources–you’ll want to create a compelling video that gives vision for meeting your goal. You can include both a campaign description and video on your Pledge Campaign page.

  1. Share your pledge campaign across multiple channels.

Tithe.ly makes it easy to share your pledge campaign across multiple channels–including your app, social media accounts, and website. Learn more about sharing your pledge campaign here

  1. Give!

Model generosity to your church members by showing them how it’s done in a pledge campaign. Your new Pledge Campaign page will allow you to choose a total amount to pledge, donation frequency (once a week, once a month, every two weeks, or the 1st and the 15th of each month), and dates to start and end your pledge. After that, the amounts will be auto-generated for you, based on your total amount and frequency.

Once you’ve made these selections, you can view your personal Pledge Plan at the bottom of the page. Then, click “Create My Pledge” to get started on giving!
