17 Bible Verses for Memorial Day to Honor and Remember the Fallen

While Memorial Day is not a Christian holiday, it is important to acknowledge and remember those who have died so that we might live in a more free country. And as Christians, we can also use this day to celebrate and remember the Biblical values of sacrifice, courage, and love.

Memorial Day is more than just the start of summer or a day off work. For many, it’s a solemn and sacred time to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. It’s a day marked by honor, reflection, and deep gratitude.

As believers, we can turn to Scripture for comfort, hope, and perspective on sacrifice and loss. Whether you're planning a church service, reflecting personally, or looking for verses to share with a grieving friend or veteran, these Bible verses will help you connect with the meaning of this national day of remembrance.

What is Memorial Day?

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States that honors those who have died while serving in the military. Observed annually on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day is a time for Americans to remember and honor the sacrifices made by those who gave their lives for their country.

The holiday originated as Decoration Day after the Civil War, which ended in 1865, and it was established to honor the Union soldiers who died in the war. The first observance of Decoration Day was held on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.

Over time, Decoration Day evolved into Memorial Day, and the holiday began to honor all Americans who died while serving in the military. In 1971, Memorial Day became a federal holiday, and its observance was moved to the last Monday in May to create a three-day weekend for Americans.

Today, Memorial Day is celebrated across the country with special events that honor the sacrifices made by those who died in service to their country. It also unofficially marks the start of the summer season…meaning that many Americans use their three-day weekend as an opportunity to BBQ with friends and family, go to the beach, and make special trips.
