Websites are like front lawns. They matter. Some people may never visit your church if they are not updated or designed well. Personally, I don’t think a website should be a deciding factor on whether or not you attend a church, but the reality is for many people it is. Years ago, my wife and I met a couple at church (who later became our good friends) who found our church because of our website! As someone who loves to blog, I think websites are a great tool churches should utilize!

In the modern digital era, people from all walks of life utilize websites, apps, and social media to connect, communicate, and access the information they need. As both a spiritual and social entity, the church should not overlook this essential platform to reach out to current members, communicate with visitors, and spread the Gospel worldwide.

The book of Romans declares, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" (Romans 10:15, ESV). This message no longer exclusively requires physical feet to traverse, as digital platforms expediently bridge gaps and boundaries.

In this article, we will explore the reasons why the local church should have a website, emphasizing the importance of maintaining an online presence for the spiritual edification and growth of Christians today. We live in a growing Digital age, and the church can use that to help reach more people without compromising the Gospel message!

Accessibility for Members and Visitors

The parable of the lost sheep illustrates Christ's care for every individual seeking the truth (Matthew 18:12-14). A church website allows members and those searching for a spiritual home to access critical information conveniently.

A comprehensive and user-friendly website provides newcomers and existing members with access to important church details, from service times and locations to upcoming events and contact information.

This could be very helpful for people who want to connect with your church outside of service times or events. After all, the local church is not a business or an entity that should only connect with people at certain times. A website can be an open door to connect with more members and visitors!

Outreach in the Digital Mission Field

The Great Commission, as recorded in the book of Matthew, commands believers to "make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19, ESV). A church website enables the local congregation to expand its outreach efforts exponentially.

Sermons, articles, and devotionals reach an international audience, introducing Christ's transformative teachings to countless individuals, some of whom may never enter a church in person.

There have been stories of articles reaching millions of people written by someone in their living room. Some cannot travel to different places to share the gospel. A website is a way to take the Gospel to places you can’t physically get to!

Fostering Community and Spiritual Growth

In his letter to the Hebrews, the Apostle Paul emphasizes the importance of meeting together to encourage spiritual growth (Hebrews 10:24-25). A local church website can nurture community and belonging, even when geographical or personal circumstances prevent physical attendance.

Online forums, discussion groups, Bible study resources, and prayer request submissions foster this spiritual connectedness among church members. Especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have learned how to connect with others online.

I remember years ago how popular online discussion forums were for building online communities. For many people, these online communities were life-changing. Fast-forward to the social media era: Facebook Groups, Twitter, and more have the same impact on many. Websites are a way to an online community beyond the walls of a church building. And with that, you can share resources and teachings to help foster spiritual growth!

Of course, online communities should never be a complete replacement for gathering with other believers, but websites can sure be a great tool for building upon them!

Providing Relevant and Timely Information

Through the Parable of the Talents, the Bible illustrates the importance of wisely using the gifts and resources at our disposal (Matthew 25:14-30). In the digital age, a church website is an efficient and effective means of relaying relevant information to its congregation.

A church website keeps members informed about what is happening in their community through newsletters, blog posts, and event updates, making stewardship of time and talents more effective.

The truth is most people get their news and updates from social media or their favorite news website. I get most of my news from Facebook and Twitter, and I visit a few websites often for updates.

The days of going somewhere in person or by a physical newspaper are long gone!

Conclusion

As disciples of Christ, it is essential to remain rooted in sacred tradition and progressive in our approach to sharing the Gospel message. A local church website is a vital tool in evangelism, spiritual growth, and community-building in today's digital world, ensuring that the good news of Christ spreads far and wide, much like the mustard seed that grows into an enormous tree (Matthew 13:31-32).

Investing in this digital platform can empower the church to walk circumspectly in technology-driven times, bridging the present with the eternal truths of the Bible and fostering deeper connections with God and one another.

Websites are not a means to replace gathering together. Like cell phones or the radio, they are a great new tool to help fulfill the mission of taking the Gospel to all people around the world!
