Nobody ever outgrows their mom.

It’s the premise of Mother’s Day.

It’s the premise of the famous children’s book Love You Forever.

I’m 30 years old, and I still remember my mom reading me that book when I was a little kid.

Love You Forever details the lifelong journey of a young mother holding her infant boy, and progressively going through his stages of growing into adulthood, with one refrain: “I’ll love you forever.”

Even when she potty trained you.

Even when you were a rebellious teenager.

Even when you were a know-it-all college student.

Even when you were dating that person you knew she disapproved of.

Even now.

“I’ll love you forever.”

This isn’t just an accident.

It’s the way God designed moms.

They’re an irreplaceable gift to each of us.

And on Mother’s Day, they are especially worthy of celebration.

Here, we’ll look at a variety of Bible verses about mothers, and characteristics we learn about moms from the Bible. Use these Mothers Day Bible verses to encourage moms. If you’re a church leader, you can use these bible verses to write a sermon for Mother’s Day.

1. Mothers give Life

God chose to make women the bearers of life.

They signify the hope of the gospel (Gen. 3:15-16).

The womb is the means by which God brings salvation to the world (Luke 1:26-38).

They make a tremendous sacrifice by bearing human life for nine months.

We should be grateful to mothers who serve this diving purpose in the world—being the nexus of human life.

Genesis 3:15-16:

“‘And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring[a] and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.’ To the woman he said, ‘I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.’”

Proverbs 139:13-16:

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

Genesis 49:24-25:

“But his bow remained steady, his strong arms stayed  limber, because of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob, because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel, because of your father’s God, who helps you, because of the Almighty, who blesses you with blessings of the heavens above, blessings of the deep that lies below, blessings of the breast and womb.”

Luke 1:26-38:

“In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, ‘Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.’ Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.’”

2. Mothers nourish children

They provide nourishment for children.

God designed women to be the indispensable element of growth, maturity, and the beautiful process of transforming an infant into a toddler.

This instinct is more than just a biological ability—it is a maternal instinct that lasts for a lifetime.

Genesis 21:7-8:

“Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age. The child grew and was weaned, and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast.”

Luke 11:27:

“And it happened, as He spoke these things, that a certain woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, ‘Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You!’”

3. Mothers love their children

They pray for their children.

They would sacrifice themselves for their children.

There’s a reason that “mama bear” has become a metaphor for how mothers relate to their children.

Protection, care, sacrifice, and devotion are instinctual for mothers.

A mom’s love is unconditional, bottomless, and the very ground on which every human being stands as they first make sense of the world.

And honestly, we never really leave that ground.

1 Samuel 1:26-28:

“‘Sir, do you remember me?’ Hannah asked. ‘I am the very woman who stood here several years ago praying to the Lord. I asked the Lord to give me this boy, and he has granted my request.  Now I am giving him to the Lord, and he will belong to the Lord his whole life.’ And they worshiped the Lord there.”

1 Kings 3:16-18:

Now two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him. One of them said, ‘Pardon me, my lord. This woman and I live in the same house, and I had a baby while she was there with me. The third day after my child was born, this woman also had a baby. We were alone; there was no one in the house but the two of us. During the night this woman’s son died because she lay on him. So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from my side while I your servant was asleep. She put him by her breast and put her dead son by my breast. The next morning, I got up to nurse my son—and he was dead! But when I looked at him closely in the morning light, I saw that it wasn’t the son I had borne.’ The other woman said, ‘No! The living one is my son; the dead one is yours.’ But the first one insisted, ‘No! The dead one is yours; the living one is mine.’ And so they argued before the king. The king said, ‘This one says, “My son is alive and your son is dead,” while that one says, “No! Your son is dead and mine is alive.”’ Then the king said, ‘Bring me a sword.’ So they brought a sword for the king. He then gave an order: ‘Cut the living child in two and give half to one and half to the other.’ The woman whose son was alive was deeply moved out of love for her son and said to the king, ‘Please, my lord, give her the living baby! Don’t kill him!’ But the other said, ‘Neither I nor you shall have him. Cut him in two!’ Then the king gave his ruling: ‘Give the living baby to the first woman. Do not kill him; she is his mother.’ When all Israel heard the verdict the king had given, they held the king in awe, because they saw that he had wisdom from God to administer justice.”

Psalm 127:3:

“Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.”

Proverbs 17:6

“Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.”

Luke 1:46-48:

“And Mary said: ‘My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant.  From now on all generations will call me blessed.’”

1 Thessalonians 2:7

“We proved to be gentle among you, as a nursing mother tenderly cares for her own children.”

4. Mothers instruct in wisdom

Everyone knows what it’s like to need their mom’s advice.

We need a listening ear.

We need someone who cares to just listen to us.

We need someone who believes in us to tell us: “You can do it!”

In bible verses about mothers, we see the hardwired purpose of moms everywhere, and if we lost maternal wisdom, we would be truly lost.

Exodus 20:12:

“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.”

Deuteronomy 5:16:

“Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.”

Ruth 1:16-17:

“Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back. Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.  Wherever you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord punish me severely if I allow anything but death to separate us!”

Proverbs 1:8:

“Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.”

Proverbs 6:20-22:

“My son, keep your father’s command and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.  Bind them always on your heart; fasten them around your neck.  When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you.”

Proverbs 23:22:

“Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.”

2 Timothy 1:5:

“I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.”

5. Mothers are worth cherishing

God places a premium on cherishing mothers.

Respecting your mother is not simply a wise decision—it’s a divine command.

And this is no mistake.

God created moms to be uniquely beautiful and valuable.

Each of us ought to cherish the woman who brought us into this world and gave her life and body to raise us.

Leviticus 19:3:

“Each of you must respect your mother and father, and you must observe my Sabbath. I am the Lord your God.”

1 Timothy 5:1-2:

“Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.”

Luke 18:20:

“You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.’ ”

6. Mothers are built to care

Sometimes, it might not feel like moms care.

Especially after you move away from home.

But she always cares.

She always thinks about you.

A mother comforts you in different ways

And she always wants you to be confident, prayerful, devout, strong, and happy.

God gave us moms because we can always count on them to have our backs and want the best for us— even when we are far away.

Proverbs 31:25-31:

“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.”

Isaiah 49:15:

“Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne?”

Isaiah 66:13:

“As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.”

7. Mothers make families orderly

They have an instinct for orderliness.

Boys can be messy.

Even dads can be messy.

Moms have a unique ability to enter chaos and restore order.

They restore order to relationships.

They restore order to homes.

They restore order to plans.

More than that—mothers are what make relationships, homes, and plans what we could never make them, often without any credit.

Proverbs 14:1:

“The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.”

This is a great mother's day verse from a child

Proverbs 22:6:

“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”

Proverbs 31:10-24:

“A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar. She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family and portions for her female servants. She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers. She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet. She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple. Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes.”

1 Peter 3:1-4:

“Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”

Ephesians 6:1-3:

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’—which is the first commandment with a promise— ‘so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.’”

8. Mothers are graceful

Men can be rough around the edges.

Moms bring grace to every situation.

They represent what it means to be classy, beautiful, and excellent at whatever you do.

Follow your mother’s lead, and you will find yourself living a more gracious rhythm in life.

Learn from your mother so that you can experience the joy of graceful living.

Titus 2:3-5:

“Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.”

Proverbs 29:15:

“A rod and a reprimand impart wisdom, but a child left undisciplined disgraces its mother.”

9. Mothers are a gift from God

There’s no denying it—we need mom.

We simply couldn’t do life without them.

God made it that way.

God put moms on earth because he wanted us to need them.

Proverbs 18:22:

“He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord.”

Proverbs 19:14:

“Houses and wealth are inherited from parents, but a prudent wife is from the Lord.”

John 19:25-27

Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home. – John 19:25-27 (New King James Version)

They represent what it means to be classy, beautiful, and excellent at whatever you do.

Follow your mother’s lead, and you will find yourself living a more gracious rhythm in life.
